My Portfolio
For my final Portfolio Project, I am interested in clothes people wear everyday, especially categories gradually occupying the mainstream market, the fast fashion. I used to be a naive teenage girl who is obsessed with cheap but bad-quality fast fashion clothing brands, like Zara, H&M, UR, etc. These brands launch new products super efficiently since most of them copy and paste the design and fabric from other brands. For instance, Zara launch new clothes twice a week, and H&M has 52 seasons a year for “new” designs. Low price is those companies’ main strategy of occupying the market and how they attract bunches of customers. However, at the same time, low budget led by low price cause the poor quality of those clothes. For customers, their mindset is completely caught by those merchants: customers gain instant satisfaction from low price clothes that have similar design with luxury brands and feel significantly lucky from it. Although the weak quality of those clothes are annoying and force people to throw them away frequently, people will not feel sad since they are pretty cheap. It environmentally cause negative effects because of the accumulating abandoned fabrics.
I use scanning, photography and flat images to add layers and fun to my final portfolio works . Collage with repeating signs and strong color comparison inspired by Selman Hosgor is the main method in four images to show absurdity and irony based on the topic. Selman Hosgor is a visual collage artist whose collages incorporate hand-painted, vintage pictures, historical figures, and some gorgeous typography. Misplacement, arrangement, reorganization, and coloring, even the "old" historical figures will have new expressions and a sense of the future under his bold and interesting techniques. I desire to express a feeling of urgency, so I choose to play with the background. Tight, colorful, conflicting colors and specially arranged shapes fulfill the whole image without any blank space. The artist Naomi Vona is really good at conveying sense of oppression from the background. As a big fan of surrealism, art works from surrealist Venera Kazarova utilizes the way of fantasy fairy tales expresses the complex and conflicted world in her eyes.
